A Kind of Stopwatch

Patrick McNulty, a know-it-all with an irritating manner and opinion on everything works for the Cooper Corporation who manufacture ladies underwear. His attitude results in him being fired, resulting in a visit to a nearby bar where he bores everyone with his opinion. He is soon approached by an elderly gentleman - Potts - who gives him a stopwatch which can pause time as a gift of appreciation for McNulty buying him a drink. McNulty sets about making everyone listen to him by way of the stopwatch, and decides to head back to the Cooper Corporation and the bar.

The Lateness of the Hour

Jana tries to encourage her parents, Dr William Loren and his wife, to try something different in their lives due to their lack of interest in leaving their home and being waited on by the house staff. Getting angry at the situation, Jana pushes one of the serveants over and comes to realise that the staff who have helped raise her are all robots created by her father, who she suggests is fearful of the outside world. Threatening to leave the house, she soon comes to realise things about herself.

The Thirty-Fathom Grave

On a U.S. Navy destroyer, Captain Bell spots a submarine appear on the sonar and the sounds of a hammering from below. The crew, with the help of diver McClure discover a submarine which was sunk during the second world war - more than twenty years ago. Bell begins to feel more unwell as time passes, and begins to hallucinate men appearing on the ship dripping wet and covered in seaweed. With Bell having a mental breakdown and eventually throwing himself off the ship to his death, McClure sets about finding out who their captain really was.

The Man in the Bottle

Arthur Castle is the owner of a failing antiques shop, who takes pity on a poor elderly woman when she brings in a wine bottle believing it to be antique. Taking pity on her, he gives her some money, much to the annoyance of his wife Edna. Accidentally knocking the wine bottle over, the pair discover a genie appearing before them who grants them three wishes for having freed him. Arthur and Edna find that each of the wishes they ask for however have unforseen consequences which they have to deal with.

The Night of the Meek

It is Christmas Eve and Henry Corwin is dressed as Santa while in a bar getting drunk instead of manning the grotto at a nearby department store. Arriving over an hour late for his job, he is quickly fired by the store manager who discovers his inebriation. Heading outside, Henry's heads down a back alley and comes across a bag of presents. Deciding to fulfil his role as Santa, he begins to hand them out to children, but risks arrest from a police officer who finds the situation suspicious as the number of presents left dwindles and Henry wonders if he will have enough for everyone.

The After Hours

Marsha White is searching a department store for a gift for her mother. Heading for the gifts department on the ninth floor, she comes away unhappy with her purchase realising it has been damaged. Attempting to rectify the situation, the manager Armbruster is confused at her suggestion the purchase was made on the ninth floor as well as other oddities which begin to make less sense including an elevator operator who turns out to be a mannequin. Marsha takes to hiding in the ladies lounge and later wakes up to a dark department store where she encounters the sales woman again who reveals Marsha's history.

Mr. Dingle, the Strong

Vacuum cleaner salesman Luther Dingle enters a bar where he ends up being asked for his opinion in the middle of two others disagreement. Two Martians also position themselves in the bar and witness the result of the disagreement - Dingle getting punched for contradicting each man. The Martians set about giving Luther super strength powers as part of an experiment to see how they will be used by humans, and are less than impressed when he decides to show off his new found ability rather than use it for good. However, another visiting set of aliens arrive with a new power for Luther Dingle.

A Stop at Willoughby

Jake Ross is struggling with his mental health due to having to deal with his high-pressure advertising job, pushy boss, and equally difficult wife who thinks very little of him. Falling asleep on the train ride home, he awakes to find the train pulling into the station of a pleasant town named Willoughby. Having ridden the line for years, and never having previously come across the town before, Jake begins to feel the pull of an idyllic and calming life on over if only he can get off the train.

The Lonely

In 2046, Corry is serving a sentence of fifty years solitary confinement on a distant asteroid. Spending his time contemplating loneliness, his only reprieve is a visiting supply spacecraft captained by Allenby, who has taken pity on Corry. This time when he visits, he leaves a gift which Corry discovers is a humanoid named Alicia. The pair are able to bond eventually and develop a relationship, which is threatened some time later by Allenby's return with news that Corry has been given a pardon and can be returned to Earth.

Of Late I Think of Cliffordville

William J. Feathersmith, a seventy-five year old wealthy business owner has made his fortune predating on others, though despite his wealth, he dreams of returning to his younger life in the town of Cliffordville. An offer to do as such comes from a man named Hecate who gives him the option to travel back in time and relive his life. Feathersmith agrees in the hopes of using his knowledge of the future to become even richer, though finds that reliving life with the plan of it being better doesn't work out as expected.
