Five Characters in Search of an Exit
A U.S. Army major finds himself trapped in a large metal cylinder with little light, and no recollection of how he got there, or much memory of his life before. He soon finds four other people trapped with him - a ballerina, a bagpiper, a hobo and a clown - who seem to have faded memories. The major becomes agitated and attempts to come up with ways to escape, as the other four suggest he take the situation as he finds it. Eventually coming to the conclusion that the only escape is through the top of the cylinder, the five come up with a plan.
The Arrival
A plane lands at an airport from which the staff have received no response, and upon landing they find it is an old DC-3 which was retired from use years ago. Attempting to board the aircraft, the staff discover it has no crew, passengers, or baggage. Tracing the logs, they find that communication with the flight was fuzzy at one point, with FAA investigator Grant Sheckly coming to the conclusion that the plane is a figment of their imaginations, and sets about proving this theory.
Queen of the Nile
Chicago columnist Jordan Herrick sets about interviewing thirty-eight year-old actress Pamela Morris, who has receded from public view in recent years. Herrick finds that Morris has barely aged or changed in the years since her first movies and discovers inconsistencies in her career. He is also advised by Morris' mother that he is in great danger should he continue to see Morris, though he fails to heed the warning. Starting dating her, Herrick is still determined to follow the story and sets about looking at a film called The Queen of the Nile for clues.
I Dream of Genie
George Hanley enters an upper-class emporium looking for a birthday gift for work colleague Ann Lawson, who he has an attraction to. Coming away with a soiled oil lamp, having been convinced by the store owner, he arrives at work and is beaten in gift-giving by the confident Roger. Returning home with the lamp, he begins to clean it, and the rubbing causes a genie to appear. The genie offers just one wish, having previously been three but stopped due to abuse, and George sets about thinking carefully what his one wish should be.
It's a Good Life
In the small town of Peaksville, Ohio, six year-old Anthony Fremont is the most powerful person. He has the ability to read the minds and change people into objects as he desires. Everyone in the town must think happy thoughts and keep up the pretence that everything in the world is "good". With the situation in the town becoming fraught, the stores are running out of items which is the result of Anthony's enforced isolation while people are disappearing due to him "wishing them away".
The Masks
Wealthy old man Jason Foster is told by his doctor this his death is imminent, and his family has been informed. Foster's hypochondriac daughter Emily soon arrives with greedy husband Wilfried, as well as their two spoilt children. Jason sets about confronting each of their personalities and is not shy about revealing his opinion of them. Despite this, he tells them he has arranged a party for them in which they will don masks in exchange for their share of an inheritance. However, as Jason succumbs to his health, his family members are transformed by the masks they have chosen for themselves.
Mr. Bevis
Mr. James Bevis is going through a tough time, when his decrepit car won't start. This causes him to be late for work where he is promptly fired upon arriving at the office. Returning home, his landlady sets about evicting him. Deciding to get drunk at a nearby bar, Bevis encounters a man in a blue suit - his guardian angel named J. Hardy Hempsted - where he discovers that everyone in the Bevis family has had an angel to watch over them. Hempsted gives Bevis the opportunity to relive his day in order to give him a better future.
Showdown with Rance McGrew
Rance McGrew stars as a heroic marshal in a fictional television series, in which his character takes on notable figures such as Jesse James. However, his tough-guy ability and skill is lacking, and he is against a scene where James shoots Rance in the back. However, at the next attempt at filming a scene, Rance is confronted with a real old west saloon with Jesse James walking into the bar particularly unhappy at the way he is being portrayed on the television series, and keen to set things right.
The Old Man in the Cave
In 1974, it is ten years after a nuclear war has devastated the United States. A supply of canned food is discovered, and with hunger mounting, they await the return of town leader Mr Goldsmith who is to bring back a message from the mysterious "old man in the cave", who will advise them on whether the food is safe to eat. The town also has to contend with an army platoon who are insistent on rebuilding society, while Goldsmith suggest they will pillage the people of the resources before leaving. The situation leaves a tense divide in the town which is losing belief.
Ninety Years Without Slumbering
Sam Forstmann is an elderly man who spends his time working on his grandfather clock. He also believes that should the clock stop working, he will be resigned to death. The situation upsets his pregnant granddaughter Marnie and her husband Doug. Sam attempts to appease them by moving the clock to the living room, though the move results in the clock slowing down - and Sam keeling over. Deciding to sell the clock to keep the peace, Sam soon becomes no longer able to maintain it and is resigned to death as his great-grandchild is being born.
